God clearly refers to himself as “us” early on in the Bible. This could just be the Royal We but it also opens up the door to the possibility of a number of Gods. God tells us these other Gods are fake but it does raise the question of why the Jews got to have a real God and their enemies (Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites) only had fake ones? Why would an all powerful God leave these people godless? Maybe they did have their own gods defending them but God was just that bit tougher? Of course, Jesus made it clear that God is the God of everyone now and His early racism should be swept under the carpet.

 

 

 

Genesis 1:26: Then God said,"Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."

Genesis 3:22: Then the LORD God said,"Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—"

Genesis 11:7 "Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another's speech."

Isaiah 41:21-22 “Present the case for your idols,” says the Lord. “Let them show what they can do,” says the King of Israel. “Let them try to tell us what happened long ago so that we may consider the evidence. Or let them tell us what the future holds, so we can know what’s going to happen.

 

God Refers to Himself

There are also places where God talks about being sent from God.

 

Genesis 19:24 Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven,

Isaiah 48:16 Come near to Me, listen to this: From the first I have not spoken in secret, From the time it took place, I was there And now the Lord GOD has sent Me, and His Spirit."

Zechariah 2:10-11 The Lord says, “Shout and rejoice, O beautiful Jerusalem, for I am coming to live among you. Many nations will join themselves to the Lord on that day, and they, too, will be my people. I will live among you, and you will know that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies sent me to you.

 

Other Gods

God talks about other gods a lot. You could be forgiven for thinking He protests a little too much about them. There are also heavenly beings thrown in here for good measure.

 

Leviticus 18:21 “Do not permit any of your children to be offered as a sacrifice to Molech, for you must not bring shame on the name of your God. I am the Lord.

Deuteronomy 32:8-9 When the High God gave the nations their stake, gave them their place on Earth, He put each of the peoples within boundaries under the care of divine guardians. But God himself took charge of his people, took Jacob on as his personal concern.

Judges 9:13 The trees then said to Vine, "You come and rule over us." But Vine said to them, "Am I no longer good for making wine, Wine that cheers gods and men, and to be demoted to waving over trees?"

1 Samuel 19:13 Then she took an idol and put it in his bed, covered it with blankets, and put a cushion of goat’s hair at its head.

Job 1:6 One day the members of the heavenly court came to present themselves before the Lord, and the Accuser, Satan, came with them.

Psalms 82:1God presides over heaven’s court; he pronounces judgment on the heavenly beings:

Psalms 89:7 The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God. He is far more awesome than all who surround his throne.

Psalms 97:7 Those who worship idols are disgraced— all who brag about their worthless gods—for every god must bow to him.

Isaiah 36:19 What happened to the gods of Hamath and Arpad? And what about the gods of Sepharvaim? Did any god rescue Samaria from my power?

Isaiah 48:14-15 "Come everybody, gather around, listen: Who among the gods has delivered the news? I, God, love this man Cyrus, and I'm using him to do what I want with Babylon. I, yes I, have spoken. I've called him. I've brought him here. He'll be successful. Come close, listen carefully: I've never kept secrets from you. I've always been present with you."

Romans 8:38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.

Ephesians 6:12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

Colossians 2:8 Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.
